About Hydro Power
Waterfalls aren’t just pretty. They can make electricity, too.
GMP Hydro Power is the largest fleet of hydroelectric generating stations in New England! It’s also our cheapest energy producer, creating renewable energy – without any emissions – at a fraction of the cost of most other generation sources.
Our roots in the hydroelectric world go back over 100 years. Chittenden Reservoir, one of our largest generation sources, was created through painstaking construction starting near the beginning of the 20th century. It was commissioned back in 1910, and it’s been a mainstay of Vermont’s generation stable ever since.
Our fleet of 32 hydro stations spans Vermont. From small mill sites to grand examples of Vermonters’ ingenuity a century ago, these stations quietly continue to help power Vermont affordably and reliably. Many of our sites also provide fun public access facilities, like picnic areas and boat ramps. To learn more, check out the entire listing of GMP Hydro Power Recreation Areas.
