General Safety - Carbon Monoxide

Prevention and detection are essential.

Carbon monoxide, or CO, is odorless and tasteless. To detect it, install Underwriter’s Laboratory (UL)-approved carbon monoxide detectors near sleeping areas in your home. Check the batteries at least twice a year. A good reminder is to check the batteries on the first days of spring and fall.

To prevent carbon monoxide poisoning:

  • Never use an oven or range to heat your home. This can cause toxic fumes and is a fire hazard.
  • Never use a gas or charcoal grill inside your home, garage or shed.
  • Never let a vehicle idle near your home or in the garage, as dangerous exhaust fumes could enter your home.
